Talooby sold 62 PTIC heifers
at the Hunter Valley Breeders Sale for an average of $885.00.
The strong demand for cattle that performed in dry conditions
was a significant factor for this great sale. Buyers included

Testimonial
“We
join around 700 heifers each year. We purchase Talooby bulls
because they get calves on the ground with minimum trouble."
"The bulls stand up well to the task and perform under
all conditions. Heifers by these bulls are making it into the
main breeding herd and are performing well as mothers.”

Sale Report
Talooby Angus to $8000 High
Angus
bulls sold to $8000 and 53 averaged $4349 in a 95 per cent clearance
at a Helmsman sale for Ron, Peter and Pat Grieve, Talooby Angus,
Rylstone, last week.
Last year 36 bulls sold to
$7500 to average $3264 with an 82 pc clearance.
Top sale price of $8000 was
paid by manager Dennis Power, “Cortina”, Wollar, for the July
2003-born Talooby APR Y 279, by Talooby Qantas from a Cluden
Newry female.
The 26- month-old sire weighed 835 kilograms with a daily gain
of 950 grams on pasture and silage, a 41.5-centimetre scrotal
circumference and strong growth and carcase weight estimated
breeding values.
The bull was selected for his figures, calving ease and strong
legs and will be used with the eight bulls bought for an average
$5000 at the sale over heifers in the 2500 breeder “Minnamurra”
herd.
‘We find these Talooby bulls
have the capacity to produce replacement heifers out of our
heifers,' Mr. Power said.
Second top price of $7750
was reached on three occasions. The Gillogly family, “Montrose”,
Moree paid $7750 for a Talooby Viscount son, $7250 for a Reiland
Verdi son and averaging $6417 for three bulls.
Lorimer
Partnership, “Burnbrae”, Casslis paid $7750 for another Reiland
Verdi and Wallings Pastoral, “ Helvetia ”. Bylong paid $7750
and 7500 for sons of new sire Brightview New Design W8.
Before the sale Talooby co-principal Peter Grieve was presented
with a life membership to the Angus Society of Australia by

What
a change a few weeks can make, from drought conditions
in May to good rains in June and July, with excellent
prospects for the Spring ahead.
The
2005 sale bulls, as would be expected, have experienced
a wide range of seasonal conditions but will present well
on September 9th. The bulls are entirely grass raised
with the only supplements being hay and silage.
With
regard to performance figures for this year’s sale
bulls - we believe the EBVs would indicate lesser growth
etc than is evident, possibly a product of our policy
of not using A.I. for a period of five years but rather
a combination of purchased and home bred sires. This had
resulted in lower accuracy but we believe the cattle are
of better phenotype as a result.
Yield,
fertility, versatility and sustainability traits are of
more value to the industry and Talooby in particular than
are high EBVs for any one particular trait.
This
year’s bulls offer a variety of genetics with the
first sons of Bright View New Design W8 among the yearlings.
W8’s Autumn drop heifers were all retained –
a rare feat for any bull to achieve a 100% retention rate.
Among
the other sires are the first sons of Talooby Viscount
V50, a bull lightly used to date in deference to lower
than promotable EBVs for growth. Also a significant proportion
of our sires again appear in the top 100 lists for fertility
traits –

This
year’s sale will be at 11.00 am as we are combining
with Pine Creek Angus to offer over 100 Angus bulls in
Bylong on September 9th 2005.
We
look forward to your visit and hope those who purchase
will have a great run from their Talooby Angus Bull.
