Talooby Spring News
Welcome to our 2007 Bull Sale . This years bulls have like most studs, had their share of tough times particularly the Winter/Spring of 2006. They have however recovered well with excellent results, particularly EMA at scanning on May 9 th .
This year we are particularly pleased to welcome Dick Whale as a part of our management team. Dick will be available on sale day to finally inspect the bulls (in addition to the usual vet checks etc) and assist clients with their selections. We urge you to take advantage of this new service.
We once again have Genestar tested the bulls to provide extra information to those requiring it. Please remember it is early days with Genestar and decisions should not be made based exclusively on the results of Genestar but rather a phenotype and where applicable, Breedplan. Perhaps a word or two about the breeding guidelines at Talooby would be appropriate.
Talooby aims to produce cattle of sound structure and good temperament-that should be a given! We endeavour to produce bulls with birthweights below breed average and as much growth as this allows, consistent with maintaining mature weights that are sensible. Remember the cow herd consumes 70% of the feed produced annually.
Also it is worth noting that a bull passes on half of the EBV value to the progeny, the cow contributes the balance eg. Two bulls that are 30kg different at 600 day EBV will be 15kg apart at 600 days in their progeny. Our analysis of Breedplan graphs shows that the Talooby herd is a high fertility herd being some, .5% above breed average for calving ease-daughters
.6% above breed average for calving ease-direct
.7%below breed average for days to calving
And some 20kg less for mature cow weight.
This combination results in more calves per 100 cows joined and a more sustainable cow herd under the conditions experienced over the last six years.
My thanks to Ben Simpson, Outcross Genetics Australia for his input and catalogue production and especially the photography, Dick Whale for his input and our staff for their efforts.
Again we welcome you to Talooby on September 7 th and hope for continuing rains for the rest of 2007.

CHRISTMAS GREETING
Pat, Ronald, Jill and Peter would like to take this opportunity to thank all our website visitors and supporters of Talooby Angus during 2006. We wish you all a joyous and festive season and a Very Happy 2007 with much green grass!!
SEASONAL UPDATE
Conditions at Talooby are much the same as most of South east Australia- dry, indeed very dry.
Drought feeding has been the order since February 2006. Along with the yearly weaning of calves etc, and the regular arrival of various fodders on large trucks at a considerable expense.
However, the cow head is in good shape, the calves are weaning well (150kgs plus at 14 weeks) and the 2007 sale bulls are in excellent conditions.
It is my firm conviction that our moderate maturity, positive fat and high fertility, Talooby Angus have made the task of drought survival, so much easier.
With exceptionally dry conditions persisting over majority of SE Australia , fodder supplies are tight, agistment very scarce and water is becoming a problem for many. However, all dry times come to an end, in my experience extreme weather, with bush fires etc will be followed by wet conditions, I hope sooner rather than later.
Talooby Angus welcomes visitors at any time, so just give us a call for further information or a visit.

GeneStar ratings were provided for the first time this year, with the bull having one star for marbling and six for tenderness.
The Minnimurra commercial herd comprises 2500 Angus and black baldy cows with the steer progeny backgrounded at 14 to18 months and 450kgs into feedlots.

Sale comment
Peter Grieve
The 2006 sale result was satisfactory given the tight seasonal conditions, which were reflected in both the clearance and average prices.
The top end bulls sold very well as is normal, with the bulls down the line as it were meeting weaker demand.
This year's bulls where tested for GeneStar tenderness and marbling with the aim of providing more complete information for our clients and building a herd profile with this exciting new technology.
The 2006 bulls, as per normal practice had not been fed grain, and consequently were presented in slightly lesser condition than normal, and should not suffer unduly at their new homes.
We are very pleased with the progress of the 2007 sale bulls which will again be GeneStar tested for all available traits. Our sincere thanks to all Buyers, Under bidders and all those that came to help make our 2006 sale day a great day. |
